The Boston College Eagles have recently been selected to host the East Regional portion of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  BC director of athletics Gene DeFilippo is thrilled for the events to return to Boston. The games are scheduled for March 22-24 at the TD Banknorth Garden.

“This decision is a tribute to the outstanding cooperation Boston College has received from Mayor Menino’s office, the city of Boston, the TD Garden, the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the local business community,” said Filippo. “We are grateful for their support and excited to have this opportunity once again.”

The home of the Boston Celtics previously served as the playing grounds for the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball regional first and second rounds, the 2009 Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, and the Women’s Final Four.

On January 8th (one week after the NHL Winter Classic at Fenway), Hockey East teams will be showcasing their skills outdoors for two games at 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm.  Organizers have recently decided to keep the frozen trend alive in college hockey, changing the name from Hockey East at Fenway to Frozen Fenway.  Sun Life Financial has just been announced as the official sponsor.

The first game of the double header will feature the best of women’s college hockey with Northeastern University squaring off against UNH.  This will surely set the stage for the premier game between the Boston University Terriers and Boston College Eagles men’s programs.

The men’s game will mark the 248th contest between the two teams.  The Eagles are defending Beanpot champions from 2008, and the Terriers from 2009.  There is always a lot on the line when the two programs play each other.  Pride is the most important factor heading into the event for these cross-town rivals.

Eagles RB Montel Harris ran for 104 yards while scoring three touchdowns as Boston College went on to run circles around Northeastern University 54-0 last Saturday.  Legendary former Heisman Trophy Winner Doug Flutie’s nephew Billy Flutie caught his first career touchdown pass.  BC football is now 5-0 against Northeastern with a total scoring gap of 133 points between the two teams.

After being down 21-0 in the first quarter, Northeastern may have finally realized that they should wait until February during hockey season to play BC.  In Boston’s annual Bean Pot hockey tournament between BU, Northeastern, BC, and Harvard, Northeastern has won four times to BC’s 14.  Boston College’s next game is set for September 12th against Kenn State at 2:00 pm.

Boston College football is scheduled to kick off the 2009 season on Saturday, September 5th at 2:00 pm, when they host their cross-town rival Northeastern Huskies.  BC has been getting prepared through four inter-squad scrimmages for the past couple of weeks.  “This is an improvement,” said head coach Frank Spaniani. “Obviously, we have to make some (quarterback) decision. I think Dave (Shinskie) is in the mix but obviously if he can’t practice for a week, he’s out of the picture. (Justin) Tuggle has made a lot of strides. He wants to do it and he made some progress.”

Last season BC finished with a 9-5 total record.  They advanced all the way to the ACC Championship where they lost to the #26 ranked Virginia Tech.  They also competed in the Music City Bowl, but fell short 14-16 to Vanderbilt University.  The last time BC and Northeastern met for a football game was in 1999 when BC held on to win 33-22.

Providence Upsets Top Ranked Pittsburgh

The Providence College Friars ended Pittsburgh’s brief reign as the top-ranked NCAA team last night. Coming off of a tough 19-point loss to Notre Dame, the Friars looked to not only regain their confidence, but to also lock up a postseason spot. With the big win over #1 Pitt, the Friars should be able to finish the season with a winning record - a difficult feat in the contentious Big East.

“We’re in a pretty good situation: we’re in the top half of the best conference in the country,” PC coach Keno Davis told the AP’s Jimmy Golen. “It puts us in the conversation. I’m sure if we had lost, they wouldn’t be talking about us anymore.”

PC will be in action in Chestnut Hill against the Boston College on Friday, February 27th at the Conte Forum.

The 57th annual Beanpot tournament took off last night at the TD Banknorth Garden.  The lasting tradition features Boston University, Harvard, Northeastern University, and Boston College, as they compete for bragging rights for what school best represents Boston Hockey for the year.

The tournament opened up with #1 ranked Boston University against Harvard.  B.U. managed to barely escape with a 4-3 win.  Harvard started hot scoring the first two goals of the game.  B.U. quickly responded with two goals of their own 1:43 seconds apart.  The third period started with B.U. Junior Zach Cohen scoring to take the lead, only for Harvard to tie the game back up three minutes later.  With
two minutes left Terriers Jason Lawrence scored the go ahead goal. Harvard then took control and got a shot off past goalie Kieren Millan, but the puck crossed the goal line one second too late and was beat by the buzzer.

The Following game featured Northeastern as they soared over the defending champion B.C. Eagles 6-1. Brad Thiessen came up with 45 saves as the Huskies advance to their first Beanpot final in four years.  The game was tied 1-1 in the first period when Greg Costa scored off a rebound to give Northeastern the lead.  The Huskies cruised from there scoring four more goals as Thiessen stopped everything that came his way.

Theissen will look to lead Northeastern next Monday as they take on B.U. in the finals.  Harvard will face off against B.C. in the consolation match.  Look for a high intense atmosphere in the Garden between the players on the ice and between rival fans side by side in the stands.
