Homepage, Sports - Until 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays had never won more than 70 games in a single season. Now they are matched up against the Red Sox to decide which team will represent the American League in the World Series. Though the Sox have an all time record of 111-58 against the Rays, Tampa had the edge in the series this year. The Rays won the season series 10-8, and were 6-0 in one run games.
It’s also worth noting that the Angels’ 8-1 record against the Red Sox in the regular season did not seem to have much effect on their ALDS matchup.
The rivalry between the Sox and Rays is coming to a head. The teams have cleared the benches six times in the past eight years, including the altercation earlier this year between Coco Crisp and James Shields. That incident resulted in eight suspensions, and a tense, highly competitive atmosphere in the matchups to follow.
“We had the one incident this year. That to me also is ancient history,” Rays skipper Joe Maddon told Yahoo! Sports writer Brett Huston. “The rivalry is being built because we’re good. This year truly is building into a legitimate rivalry, whereas in the past I think it was more fabricated.”

Sports - The Boston Bruins got their 2008-2009 season off to a positive start last night in Colorado, topping the Avalanche 5-4 in a strong offensive effort. The two teams got the offense started early with 2 goals apiece in the opening period. Phil Kessel got it started for the Bruins, scoring the 1st goal of the game with an assist from Patrice Bergeron. For Bergeron the anticipation is finally over. Bergeron missed most of last season due to injury and had to watch as his team advanced to the playoffs without him.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the 3rd period, David Krejci provided the heroics for the Bruins with a game winning goal at the 17:24 mark of the 3rd period. Also scoring for the Bruins last night were Blake Wheeler, Marc Savard and newcomer Michael Ryder. Although far from perfect, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas stopped 35 shots and made some big saves in the final seconds to preserve Boston’s win.
The Boston Bruins will play three more games on the road before their home opener at the TD Banknorth Garden on 10/20 vs the Pittsburgh Penguins. Great Bruins tickets are available for this and all 2008-2009 Bruins games.
Sports - The Boston Red Sox have set their pitching rotation for the first 3 games of the ALCS. The Red Sox will start Daisuke Matsuzaka in Friday’s game 1 in Tampa. Josh Beckett will be the game 2 starter, with Jon Lester getting the nod for game 3 at Fenway Park on Monday 10/13. Wakefield gets his first start of the 2008 postseason in game 4 at Fenway Park.
In three games vs the Rays this year, Daisuke is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and a .228 Batting Average against him. Josh Beckett did not appear against the Rays in 2008.

Homepage, Sports - The Boston Red Sox won a memorable game four against the Angels Monday night. After Jason Varitek retired Reggie Willits on a failed suicide squeeze, and Manny Delcarmen got Sunday’s hero Erick Aybar to ground out to first, the Sox came up to bat with the game tied in the ninth. After J.D. Drew struck out, left fielder Jason Bay laced a ground-rule double to right. Mark Kotsay hit a screamer that looked like it could end the game, but Angels’ first baseman Mark Teixeiera snagged for the second out. Jed Lowrie stepped up to the plate and ended the series with a ground ball to the right.
“In the back of my mind, I was thinking curveball,” Lowrie told MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “He threw me one that was up just enough, and I found a hole.”
Lowrie became the fourth rookie to end a postseason series with a walk-off. The Sox avoid the cross-country trip to LA, and get a few days off before they face the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS.

Homepage, Sports - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ended their losing streak against the Boston Red Sox, and it took five hours and nineteen minutes to do so. Both starting pitchers faltered, giving up four runs each in less-than-five-inning efforts. The story of the night was relief pitching – a total of 12.1 scoreless innings between both pens. The halos would have the final say behind an Erick Aybar RBI single in the top of the 12th. The Sox were not able to answer the run, and lost their first postseason game against the Angels since 1986.
Sunday night’s loss means that the Sox will be playing game 4 of the American League Division Series on Monday night at 8:37pm. Tickets are available now!

Sports, Ticket Sales - The Chicago Cubs were never in it. They didn’t choke, didn’t have bad luck, they just never showed up. Saturday’s 3-1 victory by the Dodgers complete the three game sweep of yet another Cubs team with high expectations. Their Championship drought now stands at 100 years as Lou Piniella’s playoff record with the Cubs drops to 0-6.
“This is six games I’ve managed now in the postseason and we have scored just 12 runs. That doesn’t get it done”, said Piniella according to ESPN.com.
For the other side, the Dodgers have a much different story. Counted out for much of the year their 2nd half resurgence, thanks in large part to Manny Ramirez, has put them in position to shock everyone in their path. Manager Joe Torre seems to have this Dodgers team focused and motivated. Torre is no stranger to postseason play with now 79 playoff wins under his belt. The first 76 of course came with the Yankees. His last three however remind you more of his first postseason go around with the Yankees in 1996. That team not yet a super star ladened lineup were more the underdog than favorite. Either way if Torre and the Dodgers have their way, Torre will be celebrating his 87th postseason victory come the end of October.
