Sports - After losing their last 12 regular season games against the Canadiens the Bruins were finally able to break through and hand Montreal a 6-1 loss last night in Boston. The Bruins used a heavy dose of early offense to put this one away early. The win for the Bruins was their eighth in nine games giving them a 10-3-3 record on the year. The Canadiens now stand at 9-3-2 on the year.
The Bruins were on the board just under 3 minutes into the first period. Shawn Thornton scored the goal, assisted by Stephane Yelle. Thornton returned the favor, assisting an Yelle’s goal at the 17:00 mark of the first. The Boston Bruins would round out the first period with a goal by Marco Sturm on the power play, opening up a 3-0 lead. It was Sturm on the power play again in the second period giving the Bruins their fourth goal of the game. Saku Koivu got the lone goal for Montreal in the second period. The Bruins padded their lead in the third period on goals by Lucic and Yelle.
The Bruins will play their next two games on the road. On Saturday they face a hot Rangers team in New York. On Monday night they’ll play in Toronto against the Maple Leafs. The Bruins will be back at the TD Banknorth Garden hosting the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday 11/19. Boston Bruins tickets are available for all 2008-2009 games.
Sports - Everyone knew the New York Yankees would have money to spend this off-season with Giambi and Pavano coming off the books. We all knew that meant a run at C.C. Sabathia. The Yankees apparently offered Sabathia 6 years at $140 Million on Thursday in the first formal offer after the Brewers offered 5 years at $100 Million to retain Sabathia. Hank Steinbrenner confirmed the offer and stated the team’s intentions to make offers to Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett as well. The Yankees are looking to sure up a rotation that certainly came up short in the 2008 season.
The Yankees’ offer to Sabathia has apparently perturbed Brewers GM Doug Melvin. Melvin can’t understand why the Yankees would offer so much more than the Brewers’ offer when no one else has even jumped in to the bidding war.
The Yankees have not heard back on whether or not C.C. Sabathia will accept their offer.

The ticket prices for NFL wild card playoff games will be cheaper than the divisional round this year as well. In the past these two rounds were priced the same.
The NFL also announced some changes to the Superbowl ticket pricing. For the first time the face values of a Superbowl ticket will hit $1000 each. However price decreases were also put into effect. The lowest price on a 2008 Superbowl ticket was $700. The 2009 Superbowl will have tickets starting at $500. This move marks the first time that the NFL has decreased any price for Superbowl tickets.

Sports - The Boston Bruins finally got on the winning side of a shootout when they beat the Chicago Blackhawks last night at the United Center. P.J. Axelsson got the winning goal in the OT shootout to seal the 2-1 win for Boston. The win puts the Bruins at 7-1-0 in their last eight games, good for a first place tie with the rival Buffalo Sabres. The Blackhawks who have also been playing superb hockey had their winning streak snapped at four.
There was very little offense to speak of in this matchup last night. There was no scoring until 19:06 of the second period when Marco Sturm scored a power play goal for Boston. The Chicago Blackhawks tied the game in the third period on a goal by Jonathan Toews.
The Bruins will host the Montreal Canadiens on 11/13. They then travel to New York to play the Rangers and Toronto before returning to the TD Banknorth Garden to host the Buffalo Sabres on 11/19. Bruins tickets are available for all remaining games.

Kevin Weekes, filling in for an injured Martin Brodeur, couldn’t keep the flood gates closed in the second period against New York. The Rangers scored four times in the second and twice on the power play.
The Devils took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Travis Zajac and outshot the Rangers 13-5. The second period was drastically different. The Rangers peppered Weekes with 20 shots in the second, getting goals from Rozsival, Drury, Korpikoski and Zherdev.

Sports, Ticket Sales - With the economy the top concern among most in the country, many sports franchises have been torn about what to do with their ticket prices. Today members of Red Sox nation can take some solace in the news that the Boston Red Sox will freeze their 2009 Red Sox ticket prices. This price freeze is the 1st time since 1995 that Red Sox ticket prices stayed the same. CEO Larry Luccino said the following in a team press release this morning:
“We have been listening to fans, friends, and family about the challenges they are facing in light of the current adverse economic conditions. We are also grateful for the unwavering faith and support our fans have shown us year after year and we hope our ownership’s decision to hold prices for the upcoming season will in some way help ease the burden on Red Sox Nation.”
Face values from the 2008 Red Sox season will remain the same for 2009. The news comes just weeks before Red Sox season ticket holders get their 2009 season ticket bills. This announcement will leave them with a little extra cash for holiday shopping. A very welcome gift from the Red Sox to their dedicated fans.
The uncertain economic climate has many franchises worried about their 2009 seasons. So far Boston teams have been lucky. Both Celtics and Bruins tickets remain in high demand. In fact Celtics and Bruins tickets are selling at a higher rate on the secondary market than they did one year ago. It doesn’t hurt that the Celtics are coming off a Championship year and the Boston Bruins are playing great hockey. Given the fact that the Red Sox are likely to be competitive in 2009 it’s unlikely that the high demand for Red Sox tickets will dissipate. Red Sox fans are notoriously loyal and devoted and will likely still show up in droves at Fenway Park. Some difference may be seen in the secondary market for 2009 Red Sox tickets but it’s too early to tell. Ace Ticket is already receiving inquiries regarding the 2009 Sox season. A good sign for sure. Landing a big name via free agency could also help the demand for Red Sox tickets. The Red Sox have interest in a few big names this offseason, including Mark Texiera.
For their part the Red Sox expect to weather the economic storm. Even though they are freezing prices for 2009 they remain optimistic about the team’s future both on the field and as a business. Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino had the following to say to USAToday.com:
“I don’t think we’ve hit some kind of plateau,” he says. “We’ll find new avenues, new possibilities. The 100th anniversary of Fenway Park is going to be a very big deal. We have more plans to enhance Fenway”.
Sports - If there’s one criticism for the 2008-2009 Boston Celtics its their slow starts in games. The Celtics have had terrible first periods so far this year. The good news of course is that they have displayed a tremendous ability to fight back, shut down the opponents’ offense and pull away with the win. In this game the Celtics actually found themselves down after three quarters but got a memorable performance out of Paul Pierce in the fourth to secure the win. Pierce absolutely dominated with 22 points in the 4th and 36 points for the game.
It was a good game all around for the Big Three. Kevin Garnett had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Ray Allen dropped 19 points on the Raptors. The loss for the Raptors was particularly upsetting for Jermaine O’Neal who had a great game for Toronto with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The win put the Celtics at 7-1 on the year.
The Celtics will host the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday 11/12. Great Celtics tickets are available for this and all Celtics games.
