Flyers Out Sick; Bruins Capitalize

Posted by Ace Staff on February 5th, 2009

Homepage, Sports - Philadelphia Flyers captain Mike Richards, forward Scottie Upshall, and defensemen Braydon Coburn all sat last night due to illness, only to watch the Bruins out-tough the rest of their squad 3-1 last night in Philadelphia.  Going into the third period the game was tied 1-1 until the Flyers collapsed giving up two goals to David Krejci and Dennis Wideman 35 seconds apart. Goalie stand out Tim Thomas made 14 of his 25 saves all in the first period.  Between Thomas and Manny Fernandez, the Bruins have allowed the fewest amount of goals this season out of any team at 114.   Following the game Wideman expressed the confidence he has in his squad. “As a team lately, we’ve come together and we’ve been playing quite well as a group defensively.” This is Boston’s third win in a row as they hold on to their #1 spot in the NHL league rankings.  The Bruins look to keep the win streak alive as they hit the road and head north to match up against the Ottawa senators tonight at 7:00 p.m. Boston Bruins tickets are available now!

Ray Allen's Buzzer Beater Tops Sixers

Posted by Ace Staff on February 4th, 2009

Homepage, Sports - With half a second to go, Ray Allen fired off a game-winning 3-pointer to give the Celtics their 12th consecutive win. Without Kevin Garnett for the second consecutive game, the rest of the team had to step it up again. Paul Pierce was stellar again, scoring 29 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists-including the game winner to Allen. “I got to my spot and (Pierce) made a great play,”Allen told AP writer Dan Gelston. Allen’s recent stellar play seems to be giving him a shot at the All-Star team. “I think he’s an All-Star,” Doc Rivers told the AP“If they make an injury substitution, I think those shots clinched it.” Glen Davis continues to make a huge impact as KG’s replacement. Big Baby had a  doubl-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and managed to stay out of foul trouble for most of the game. Boston Celtics tickets are available now!

Harvard Gives BU a Scare at the Beanpot

Posted by Ace Staff on February 3rd, 2009

Sports - The 57th annual Beanpot tournament took off last night at the TD Banknorth Garden.  The lasting tradition features Boston University, Harvard, Northeastern University, and Boston College, as they compete for bragging rights for what school best represents Boston Hockey for the year. The tournament opened up with #1 ranked Boston University against Harvard.  B.U. managed to barely escape with a 4-3 win.  Harvard started hot scoring the first two goals of the game.  B.U. quickly responded with two goals of their own 1:43 seconds apart.  The third period started with B.U. Junior Zach Cohen scoring to take the lead, only for Harvard to tie the game back up three minutes later.  With two minutes left Terriers Jason Lawrence scored the go ahead goal. Harvard then took control and got a shot off past goalie Kieren Millan, but the puck crossed the goal line one second too late and was beat by the buzzer. The Following game featured Northeastern as they soared over the defending champion B.C. Eagles 6-1. Brad Thiessen came up with 45 saves as the Huskies advance to their first Beanpot final in four years.  The game was tied 1-1 in the first period when Greg Costa scored off a rebound to give Northeastern the lead.  The Huskies cruised from there scoring four more goals as Thiessen stopped everything that came his way. Theissen will look to lead Northeastern next Monday as they take on B.U. in the finals.  Harvard will face off against B.C. in the consolation match.  Look for a high intense atmosphere in the Garden between the players on the ice and between rival fans side by side in the stands. Celtics Win 11th Straight, Without KG

Posted by Ace Staff on February 2nd, 2009

Homepage, Sports - In Sunday’s matchup, former Celtics put up 61 points on their old team. Current Celtic Paul Pierce answered with a 36-point, 8 rebound, 6 assist effort in the absence of the “biggest” of the Big Three. “I just try to give the game what it needs. Today, I thought it needed my scoring,” Paul told Jimmy Golen of the AP. “You go off and say ‘Hey, I’ve still got it.’ Even at 31.” Al Jefferson, a major piece in the deal that brought Kevin Garnett over from the Timberwolves, had 34 Pts and 11 rebounds against his old club. Boston led by as many as 21, but a 15 of 17 Minnesota run eventually put them within 5 points. But Allen and Pierce had a jumper and two free throws to put the C’s back up by 9

Rask, Thomas Lead Bruins to NHL Best in Points

Posted by Ace Staff on February 2nd, 2009

Homepage, Sports - Tuukka Rask was impressive in his first NHL start in nearly 14 months. Rask stopped all 35 of the Rangers shots; earning a shutout in his 4th professional start. The Boston Bruins D was firing on all cylinders – Dennis Wideman deflected an open net shot that would have tied the game up in the final period. Marc Savard provided the only offense of the game, scoring the winning goal with just 22 seconds left in the second period. On Sunday, the Bruins continued their dominance over the rival Montreal Canadiens.  Since beating Boston in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals last season, Montreal has not been able to get a win. Just one week after Tim Thomas got a standing ovation at the Bell Centre (with the Eastern Conference All-Star Team), his usual reception was back. A stellar one-goal, 27 save outing netted him the First Star, and a healthy round of boos. “When I got called out for the first star there, they were booing and that’s the way it should be,” Thomas told the AP. “That’s what rivalries are all about.” Second Star Dennis Wideman is currently on a 6-game point streak, and has 3 goals and 3 assists in that span. The Bruins currently lead the NHL with 81 points. Boston Bruins Tickets are available now!
