The Whos Townshend to Write Musical

Pete Townshend (guitarist and songwriter for The Who) is planning to write a new musical titled “Floss.”  He alerted fans through posting on The Who’s website, saying “in this case the songs are interspersed with surround-sound ’sounds capes’ featuring complex sound-effects and musical montages. Several of the more conventional songs from Floss will be featured on a forthcoming Who recording for release in 2010.” The musical is expected to be completed and make its debut by 2011.  Townshend has stated that he is already talking with producers in New York, and will solely focus on this project while The Who front man Roger Daltrey is on his own solo-tour.

As the primary songwriter for his band, Townshend has written over 100 songs for their eleven studio albums, including rock operas “Tommy” and Quadrophenia.” He has said that he would like his new musical to display a style similar to his previous works.  Townshend’s overall ideas for the musical are for it to touch “on the current issues faced by the Boomer generation. It also addresses their uneasy relationship with their parents, children and grandchildren.  As a 19 year old — with “My Generation” — I wrote the most explicitly ageist song in rock.  At 64, I now want to take on aging and mortality, using the powerfully angry context of rock & roll.”
