The last time the Celtics and Nets met, the Celtics made it look easy in a 118-86 rout. Saturday night’s game was no different, with the C’s nearly doubling up on New Jersey in the first half. The Celtics benefited from Rajon Rondo’s near triple double (9 rebounds, 14 assists, and 8 points, along with 2 steals), solid play off the bench from Leon Powe and Eddie House, and Ray Allen’s 25 point effort.
“It was a great start,” C’s coach Doc Rivers told the AP. “It’s one of the things we talked about. If you get off to a good start, it gives you a chance to play well the whole game. I thought the whole team was running well.”
The Celtics will host the Phoenix Suns at home tonight at the Garden. Keep your eyes on Shaquille O’Neal’s Twitter feed in case he any enlightening post-game comments.

The Conference Championships are over, and the matchup for the 2009 Superbowl is set. The Arizona Cardinals capitalized on Philadelphia’s mistakes to win the NFC Championship 32-25. Behind the stellar defensive play of Troy Polamalu, the Steelers contained Ravens’ rookie QB Joe Flacco. The Steelers’ 23-14 win puts them in the Super Bowl for the second time in 4 years. This is the first Super Bowl appearance, and second Championship game (the Chicago Cards won the 1947 meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles).

After beating their rival Canadiens in a tough game on Tuesday, a somewhat fatigued Boston Bruins team headed to New York – their first road game in nearly two weeks. The Islanders out-skated, out-shot, and generally outplayed the Bruins; but Tim Thomas’ dominant goaltending gave the Bruins the win. Thomas stopped an incredible 40 of 41 shots (Islanders netminder Yann Danis stopped 25 of 27) and continued to show why he was selected to the NHL All-Star game. On Saturday the Bruins will face the Capitals in Washington at 7:00pm.

ESPN’s Peter Gammons has reported that the Boston Red Sox have signed first-baseman Kevin Youkilis to a four-year extension worth over $40 million. The deal includes a fifth year option for $13 million, and covers his final two years of arbitration and two years of free agency. Youkilis hit .312 last year with 29 home runs and 115 runs batted in, is just one year removed from winning a Gold Glove at first, and came in third in American League MVP voting.

Last night’s 118-86 rout of the New Jersey Nets was just what the Boston Celtics needed. The win was the third in a row for the Celtics who recently had a 2-7 slump to deal with. The last three games have seen the Celtics really return to form. Now at the halfway point of the season the Celtics’ record is 32-9 just two games off of last year’s pace.
Paul Pierce did most of the scoring last night for Boston with 22 points total. Pierce went 5-5 on 3 pointers in the 3rd quarter putting the Celtics well out in front of the Nets. Kevin Garnett added 20 points and 9 rebounds. Glen Davis added 12 points off the bench.
Last night’s loss was the sixth straight for the Nets against the Celtics. They’ll get another shot on Saturday night when Boston visits the Nets in New Jersey. The Celtics will be back at the Garden on 1/19 to host the Suns. Celtics tickets are available for this and all remaining 2009 games.

In his 15th and final year of eligibility, Red Sox left fielder Jim Rice was finally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His induction gives the Red Sox a streak of Hall of Fame left fielders from 1939-1986, encompassing the entire careers of Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Rice. One of the most feared hitters of his time, Rice won the AL MVP in 1978 and ranked in the top five in voting on five occasions. As noted on his Wikipedia page: “from 1975 to 1986, Rice led the AL in total games played, at bats, runs scored, hits, homers, RBIs, slugging average, total bases, extra base hits, go-ahead RBIs, multi-hit games, and outfield assists.”Rice is the only player to ever lead the major leagues in RBI’s, triples, home runs in one season, and his career 4,129 total bases is still the team best.

On Monday, January 12th, 2009, the results of Jim Rice’s last chance to join the Baseball Hall of Fame will be announced. On the ballot for the 15th time, this is the last chance Rice will have. Last year Rice had 73% of the vote, just 16 votes short of enshrinement. “I just don’t think about it,” Rice told the AP. “The ballots are in. There’s nothing you can do about it. So you can’t change anything, so why worry about it.” Left fielder Rickey Henderson will be on his first ballot, a nearly unanimous shoo-in for the hall. Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven, both short in their previous years on the list, will try to hit the required 75% again.

The Boston Celtics have been on a 2-6 skid since having their winning streak derailed by the Los Angeles Lakers. Amid speculation of acquiring Knick Stephon Marbury and the rapidly approaching trade deadline, the C’s need to either right the ship or figure out what they need. The Cavaliers, looking for revenge for being knocked out of the playoffs last year and an opening night loss this year, have usurped the C’s as top team in the NBA in most power rankings. Tip-off is at 8:00pm at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
