Lester Dominates Orioles Again, Papelbon Ties Record

Last night Jon Lester continued his success against the Baltimore Orioles. Going into the game with a career 7-0 records in 9 starts against the team, Lester didn’t seem to look any different from his previous outings. Allowing only five hits and no walks in 7 innings, Lester continued to dominate the Orioles. He threw 8 strikeouts and allowed only one man to advance past first base. With a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning (due to a J.D. Drew two-run home run and rbi single from Jason Varitek), Lester needed no more support in order to win. Closer Jonathan Papelbon shut the door in the 9th to tie Bob Stenley’s Red Sox save record at 132.  The Sox have two more games at Camden Yards before an off-day and  a 10-game homestand leading into the All-Star Break.

Yao Ming Could Miss Season, Longer

Houson Rockets’ big man Yao Ming is facing a serious foot injury. Ming has had four surgeries on his feet and ankles in the part three years, and may not be able to have another and keep playing. The 7-foot-6 center from China may need upwards of a year to heal his broken foot. The Rockets team physicial Tom Clanton even went as far as to call the latest injury “career threating”. Even if Yao can get back into playing shape, his ankles and feet will always be prone to injury due to his size. The Rockets acquired three guards from the draft: Jermaine Taylor, Sergio Llull, and Chase Budinger. The Rockets have the luxury to trade or drop two of them, and seem to have made smart and cheap decisions.

Sox Fall Short of Sweep vs Braves

Going for a series sweep, the Boston Red Sox were hoping flu-like symptoms would keep Braves rookie sensation Tommy Hanson from pitching. However, Hanson fought through the illness impressively. Allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings, Hanson dominated the Sox lineup. With just one run for the Sox in the entire game (from Jason Varitek in the 9th), the Sox seemed ready to put interleague play behind them. Though the Sox finished 11-7 versus the NL, both Sox pitchers and DH David Ortiz can get back into normal playing routines.

Prior to last night, the Sox collected victories with Beckett and Wakefield at the mound. Only allowing 4 runs in the 3 games played this series, the Sox starting rotation looked unstoppable. David Ortiz hit his 8th homer of the season this weekend, continuing to fix his batting average and stats.

With the orthodox schedule back, the Sox start a series at Baltimore and then have a 10 game home trip leading into the all star break. With 1 day off and 13 games until the break, the Red Sox are looking to keep their AL East lead and to further gain control of the American League.

WEEI is reporting that sources say that Fenway will host collegiate hockey action a week after the Winter Classic. According to the report, Boston College and Boston University have agreed to play at Fenway on January 8th. This game would take advantage of Fenway already being in an “alternate mode”, much like the Phish show after Dave Matthews earlier this year. Discussions for a second game that day are currently underway. Game 2 would likely be another Hockey East matchup, and may be either either men’s or women’s teams.

The first day of the US open ended in a non fashionable manner; heavy rain suspended the tournament at Bethpage Black until Friday. Favorite and defending champion, Tiger Woods, ended the day +1 after 6 holes. Woods’ partners, PGA championship winner Padraig Harrington and Masters winner Angel Cabrera, knew as well as Tiger that rain was going to be an issue, and this showed in the scores for every golfer. Angel Cabrera ended his day at even par thru 6 holes, while Harrington shot +4 thru 6. The leader of the tournament after “the first day” is Jeff Brehaut, who is -1 thru 11 holes. He is tied for first with several players. As everybody knows, no matter his situation, Tiger Woods will be in contention for the championship at the end of this weekend.
