Swisher, Chamberlain Give Yanks the Win

The New York Yankees survived a near-collapse of their bullpen to notch a 8-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Joba Chamberlain showed why New York wants him to be a starter; allowing only one run on three hits and three walks through 7 innings, while racking up 6 k’s. Nick Swisher was the offensive catalyst for the Yanks, racking up 4 RBI on two homers and helping to chase Detroit starter Rick Porcello.

The Yanks didn’t have it easy after Chamberlain was done, though. The Tigers mounted an impressive comeback, scoring four runs off of reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, as well as getting a huge two run homer off of Mariano Rivera by Curtis Granderson. Detroit fell short in the end, and the Yankees won their second consecutive game.

On Thursday night the Yankees host the Angels for the beginning of a three-game set. New York Yankees tickets are available now.

Boston Red Sox games have been running pretty long lately, and Wedesday night’s matchup against the Cleveland Indians was no exception. Coming off of a tough extra-innings the previous night (on a Javier Lopez fielding error), the Sox found themselves in extras again. Jon Lester had a tough outing, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks, in 6 innings of work. Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona, who has had a tough 2009 season so far, only gave up 2 runs in 2 2/3 innings.

The real story was the continued dominance of the Sox bullpen. Javier Lopez, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, and Jonathan Papelbon combined for four scoreless innings; allowing only one hit and 5 walks while striking out 5.  Cleveland’s Rafael Betancourt allowed three baserunners, all of which would score to tie the game in the 8th. Jonathan Van Every, who only had one plate appearance on the seasib before Wednesday, made the difference. Already having an RBI single in the 8th, Van Every hit a solo homer to deep center, giving the Sox the lead in extras.

The Sox travel to Tampa Bay for a four game set against the Rays starting on Thursady night. Boston Red Sox tickets are available now!

Despite some sloppy defense and questionable shots, the Boston Celtics bested the Chicago Bulls in an overtime nail-biter on Tuesday night. Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins made a solid case for their inclusion in this year’s big three as Ray Allen fouled out in the 4th quarter. Rondo scored 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, as well as the tough defensive foul on Brad Miller than sealed up the game for the C’s. Perkins had 16 points, 19 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. “When you’ve got Ray fouled out of the game and you’re searching for bodies, it didn’t look good,” C’s coach Doc Rivers told the AP’s Jimmy Golen. “And we dug down and won the game.”

Paul Pierce had huge shots to both tie the game and send it into overtime, and to give the C’s the win. The Celtics travel to Chicago on Thursday to try to take the series on the road.

The luck of the Boston Red Sox ran out Tuesday night in the 9th inning against the Cleveland Indians. With the score tied up at 8 and Mark DeRosa on third base, Javier Lopez fumbled the play at first, and the Indians walked off with the victory. “It’s a play a pitcher makes a thousand times in his career,” Lopez said in a post-game press conference. “I just took my eyes off it. There’s no real excuse for it. It’s a tough way to break a winning streak.”

Sox started Brad Penny had another tough outing. Penny gave up 7 runs (4 earned) through 2 2/3 innings on 7 hits and three walks, only striking out one.  Spot closer and de-facto set-up man Takashi Saito blew his first save of the year. On the positive side, Hunter Jones threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and as-yet-unscored-on Ramon Ramirez threw a perfect inning and a third.

The Sox and Indians will match up for the  rubber game tonight at 7:30pm.

Atlanta Hawks 81, Miami Heat 71.

Azaza Pachulia dominated the glass for the Hawks with 18 rebounds, helping Atlanta regain their home court advantage with a 81-71 win over the Miami Heat.  The Hawks scoring was basically split between Bibby, Johnson, and Smith scoring 15, 14, and 13.  Atlanta coach Mike Woodson stated that Pachulia was the crucial factor to the win.  “Zaza was huge throughout the whole game,” said Woodson. “I mean, 18 rebounds, 12 points for us, and we needed all that tonight to survive.”  Dwayne Wade scored 22 for the Heat and Jermaine O’Neal contributed 20, but Miami was never ahead and only shot 38 percent.

Denver Nuggets 121, New Orleans Hornets 63.

Carmelo Anthony led the Nuggets with 26 points and was taken out in the fourth quarter due to the 58 point blow out over the New Orleans Hornets.  The victory matched the biggest lopsided contest in NBA playoff history, which came in 1956 when the Minneapolis Lakers beat the St. Louis Hawks 133-75.  The Hornets will need their All-Star point guard Chris Paul to step up in order for them to stay in the series.  The Nuggets held Paul to just 4 points and 6 assists.  Denver leads the series 3-1.

Los Angeles Lakers 107, Utah Jazz 96.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to finish the series in 5 games with 31 points against the Utah Jazz last night at the Staples Center.  The Lakers were in control the whole game, winning every quarter in scoring aside from the fourth.  Utah made a run at the end cutting the 20-point deficit to just six with 3:15 remaining.  From there Lamar Odom came up with two clutch finishes after LA kicked in its defense to officially decide the series.  “We out did them,” said Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. “I thought it was a disappointment to them but they played hard; they played together and you have to give them credit.  I thank them for giving us a run and a good, hard series.”

Tim Wakefield delivered again for the Red Sox last night, giving up only one hit in 7 innings against the Cleveland Indians.  He is playing his best baseball to date and flirting with the no-hitter milestone in his last three outings.  Red Sox manager Terry Francona assures that Wakefield is capable to shut out the opposing team any time he steps out on the mound. “I’ve seen him in some unbelievable runs,” said Francona. “He’s been a good pitcher for a long time.”

Though Wakefield’s start was nothing short of phenomenal, he was not alone in contributing to the 11th straight Red Sox win.  The key play came in the top of the 9th, when Jason Bay belted a three run homer to produce the first runs in the game.  It took Boston to score their runs so late in the game due to the pitching on the other end.  Cliff Lee started on the hill for the Indians and allowed just five hits in eight innings.

The Red Sox have two more games at Cleveland today and tomorrow at 7:05 pm before they head to Tampa Bay to face off against the defending AL champion Rays.  Boston Red Sox tickets are now available!

Bulls Tie Series With 2OT Win Over Celtics

Despite Ray Allen’s huge 3 to tie the game at the end of regulation, the Bulls forced a second overtime and eventually took the win. Ben Gordon had his own big three, taking a feed from John Salmons to force the second OT. The Bulls had the upper hand in the second extra period, besting the C’s 121-118.  “It’s 2-2 and we’re in a fight,” Rajon Rondo told the AP’s Andrew Seligman. “Give them a lot of credit. They stuck with it. They fought back. They executed down the stretch very well and we didn’t.”

A close game throughout, the Celtics’ third period surge gave them a slim going into the last quarter. Sloppy play, fouls, and turnovers gave the Bulls a 3-point lead with just 16 seconds to go, but Allen made his shot count, sending it into overtime. The teams played close, with the C’s holding a slim with less than ten seconds to go before Gordon’s three.

The series continues on April 28th in Boston at the TD Banknorth Garden. Boston Celtics Playoff Tickets are available now!
