The New England Patriots have traded outside linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a draft pick. Details are sparse, and the whole deal is still pending a physical. The new “chief” in KC, former Patriots personnel guru Scott Pioli seems to have gotten his favorite defensive player back. The consensus seems to be that the Patriots will receive a 3rd-4th round draft pick as compensation.

The Patriots free up roughly $3 million in cap space with the move.

Marbury Signs With Celtics, Will Wear Number Eight

The Boston Celtics have signed Stephon Marbury to a 1.3 million dollar contract. Marbury will make the prorated league veteran minimum salary, and will be wearing the number 8. As the Celtics only have 11 active players at the moment, Marbury may suit up for tonight’s game. Marbury is a solid low-risk, high-reward signing; as the C’s will either get a solid veteran presence at guard, or have the option to cut Marbury with little consequence against the cap.

“We are very excited to have a player of Stephon’s caliber joining our team” Celtics president of Basketball operations told the Globe’s Mark Spears. “Our entire organization is confident in the belief that Stephon can play an important role in helping us to win another championship.”

The Celtics face the Indiana Pacers tonight in Boston at 7:00pm.

Thomas Has Shutout, Assist Against Ducks

Boston Bruins goaltender was involved in both the offensive and defensive sides of the ice last night. In addition to a 35-save shutout, Thomas racked up his second assist as a Bruin. Thomas passed the puck from the crease to Michael Ryder at the blue line, who ricoched a shot off of a defenseman to give the Bruins their fourth goal of the night. “A goalie’s assists aren’t really important. If I get 98 more maybe there’s a bonus in my contract,” Tomas told the AP’s Jimmy Golen. “If (only) they could get me six goals every game. We set the bar high.”

Ryder would rack up another goal, along with Matt Hunwick and Byron Bitz. Chuck Kobasew also had two goals on the night, including one of the B’s two power play goals. After a dismal mid-February, the Bruins have bounced back to score six goals in their last two games. The Bruins face off against Washington at home on Saturday afternoon.

Alternative metal band Faith No More will finally be reuniting for the first time since 1998.  They are currently planning a European tour and are discussing the possibility of touring later in the U.S.  They are most well known for their 1989 album “The Real Thing” featuring the single “Epic.”  The album became popular to U.S. mainstream rock listeners and eventually reached multiplatinum status.

The band later released the album “Angel Dust” which did not reach the sales of “The Real Thing” in America but outsold it in other countries.  “Angel Dust” went platinum in Canada and Gold in Australia and Germany.

FNM fans are highly anxious to see what is to come from the group. Singer Mike Patton has chosen to stay away from interviews until the start of the tour. With this said there may be a few surprises to see what members will return.  Guitarist Jim Martin is rumored to be coming back after making his exit from the band in the early 90’s. Look for FNM tickets to be released soon.

Clippers Stun Celtics

Zach Randolph helped the Clippers with 30 points and 12 boards to come away with a win against the Boston Celtics 93-91 last night at the Staples Center.  Baron Davis and Marcus Camby also had big nights, scoring 16 and 14 points and combining for 18 rebounds.  Boston lead LA at the end of the first half 50-46, but the Clippers were in control from there.  They were able to win the 3rd and 4th quarter both by three points to hold off the heavily favored Celtics.

The Clippers haven’t been able to create much success this season, and they have been waiting for something like last night to get them going.  “It was one of those games that you cherish,” said Clippers  guard Baron Davis.  “It’s a good start getting everyone healthy.  That’s going to help us be a threat as the end of the season approaches.”

As the Clippers are on the upside of their injury troubles, Boston is struggling more than ever.  Brian Scalabrine and Kevin Garnett were already out with injuries for the game, and Paul Pierce dislocated his right thumb in the third and fourth quarter.  Although he played through the pain, he missed the go ahead shot for Boston with 20 seconds remaining.  “It seems like someone is going down every week,” said Pierce.  “The most important thing right now is just to battle through it and try to get healthy.”

The Celtics will finally be coming back to Boston for their next game against the Indiana Pacers on February 27th.  They have currently been  talking to Stephon Marbury with hopes that he will fill the roster.   The team agrees that they will be more than happy to have him if he can be open to team ball and stay on his best behavior.

Vernon Wells Sidelined for Spring Training

Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells injured his left hamstring during drills Monday and is likely to sit for most of spring training.  He was scheduled for an MRI later in the day and is currently waiting for the results.  Manager Cito Gaston tries to find light in his injury saying its better to be hurt now than later in the year.  “He’s got a chance to be ready to start the season, possibly as a designated hitter,” said Gaston.

Wells has been battling injuries in his recent career.  He missed 52 games last season due to breaking his wrist and straining the same hamstring he is now having trouble with.  In his 108 games played last year he batted .300 with 20 homeruns and 78 RBIs.  The Blue Jays hope Wells can get better for spring training and be ready to go for the upcoming regular season.  Gaston said Jose Bautista will stand in for Wells at center field when the Blue Jays take on the New York Yankees to open up their spring training.

Ken Griffey Jr. Settles back in Seattle

The Seattle Mariners recently announced that they will be signing back past Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. to a one-year $2 million dollar deal plus incentives.  Seattle fans are anxious to see Griffey back in a Mariners uniform, as he is one of the most talented players to ever be apart of the franchise.  He is the Mariners career leader in home runs (398), slugging percentage (.569), and is second to Edgar Martinez for total games played.  He is currently in fifth on baseball’s career home run list with 611.

The 2009 Mariners will plan to keep the DH position open for Jr. If he is able to stay healthy left field will also serve as an option. Griffey first came into the league as a Mariner in 1989 and eventually was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2000.  After agreeing to a contract with the Chicago White Sox in 2008 he is already back on the move but this time to where his career started.  He has struggled with injuries lately and is just healing from an arthroscopic knee surgery following the 2008 season.

Griffey is thrilled to be back in Seattle and has always stated that he would like to finish his career as a Mariner.  If he can stay injury free the recent acquisition will show as very promising for the Mariners.

Providence Upsets Top Ranked Pittsburgh

The Providence College Friars ended Pittsburgh’s brief reign as the top-ranked NCAA team last night. Coming off of a tough 19-point loss to Notre Dame, the Friars looked to not only regain their confidence, but to also lock up a postseason spot. With the big win over #1 Pitt, the Friars should be able to finish the season with a winning record - a difficult feat in the contentious Big East.

“We’re in a pretty good situation: we’re in the top half of the best conference in the country,” PC coach Keno Davis told the AP’s Jimmy Golen. “It puts us in the conversation. I’m sure if we had lost, they wouldn’t be talking about us anymore.”

PC will be in action in Chestnut Hill against the Boston College on Friday, February 27th at the Conte Forum.
