The Boston Red Sox have re-signed captain Jason Varitek. The 1-year $5mm deal includes player and club options for 2010, which include incentives that could bring the total value of the contract to a possible $12mm. With pitchers and catchers reporting next month, the Sox have solved their catching problem for the 2009 season.

Paul McCartney will be headlining the 2009 Coachella Festival. McCartney is touring in support of his latest album “Electric Arguments”, and will be performing on the Festival’s first night. Eddie House shot 8-9 from beyond the arc to score a career high 28 points as the C’s handled the Sacramento Kings 119-100 last night in Boston. Point guard Rajon Rondo scored 24 points and dished out 28 assists. Glen Davis, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen scored 14, 14, and 12. Paul Pierce chipped in with eight points and eight assists in his
27 minutes played.
After the game Garnett made it a mission to promote Eddie House for the upcoming NBA All-Star events. “He needs to be in the 3-point contest,” he said. “That’s what this press conference is about: Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are here to say that we think Eddie House needs to be in the 3-point contest.” Garnett and Pierce aren’t the only people supporting House, knowing the crowd chanted his name whenever he touched the ball along with giving him a standing ovation when he left the court with 4 minutes left.
The C’s gave Sacramento their seventh straight loss as they continue a winning streak of their own. John Salmons and Jason Thompson led the Kings scoring 22 and 21 points, but their efforts weren’t enough to make it even a close game.
Boston’s next test will be January 30th against the Pistons in Detroit. The Pistons will be looking to end the streak with the Celtics hoping to keep rolling heading into the All-Star break.

U2 will perform at this year’s Grammy Awards Show on February 8th. It is not part of any U2 tour but its a live U2 performance nonetheless. You can also catch U2 perform at the Brit Awards on February 18th and Germany’s Echo Awards later that month. U2 will likely be performing their new single, ‘Get On Your Boots’ at all three awards shows.

Tickets for The Phantom Gourmet’s wildly successful Food Festival are on sale now! Scheduled for September 26th, the yearly Food Festival is the biggest and best culinary event in Boston. This year, the event will be taking over the streets around Fenway and offering over 80 different foods to sample. Regular tickets are $40 in advance, and include admittance to the streets and parties in the clubs on Lansdowne Street (as well as all the food you can sample!). This is a 21+ event.

A source close to the Boston Globe has disclosed that the J. Geils band will christen the Boston House of Blues with a performance on February 19th. The Boston band has played a scant number of shows in the past decade, and this could be one of few gigs with the original lineup in nearly 15 years. The Geils band show will be followed up by the Gipsy Kings on February 20th, and BB King & Buddy Guy on February 22nd.

According to a source close to the Red Sox, Jason Varitek has until Friday to accept or reject Boston’s 1-year $5million contract. The deal reportedly has team and player options for 2010, and possibly includes performance bonuses. The deadline will give the Sox enough time to go after another catcher if Varitek declines; among the possibilities are the D’Backs’ Miguel Montero, or either Taylor Teagarden/Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers.

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band will definitely be on tour in 2009 in support of the new album, ‘Working On a Dream’. The full scope of the 2009 tour is not known yet but some pieces are already in place including two shows at Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden on April 21 and April 22.

Will you get the new U2 album, ‘No Line On the Horizon’ before its early March release date? If you want to you’ll have to travel to the band’s hometown to do so. Their upcoming album scheduled for release on March 2 in Europe and March 3 in the U.S. will be released on February 27 in Ireland only. No details on how or why the album is getting an early release for U2’s homeland but U2 fans in Dublin won’t complain.
U2’s first single off the new album, “Get on Your Boots” has been met with mixed reviews. Some lovers, some haters and some right in the middle. Either way the sound is definitely not typical U2 and has certainly created a buzz around the rest of the album’s tracks.
