What will the Yankees do in October? Since 1995 the answer was simple, play baseball. However 2008 marks the first time since 1995 that the New York Yankees will not be in the playoffs. For Derek Jeter its the first time in his MLB career that he is not playing baseball in October. With the playoff streak broken you can bet the bank that the Yankees will try to reload this off-season.

The first step in preparing for next year is now done. The Yankees signed General Manager Brian Cashman to an extension through 2011. According to ESPN.com Cashman said, “I’ve got a job to finish here”. The Yankees are still a very talented team and will likely benefit from some pitching upgrades. Many speculate that the Yankees will make a play for C.C. Sabathia, the best free agent pitcher on the market for 2009. Other Pitching options could include Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett.

The New York Yankees will also benefit greatly if they can stay healthy. Injuries to Wang, Posada and Chamberlain definitely contributed to New York’s woes this season. They should expect a better year at the new Yankee Stadium in 2009. Only time will tell though.

The MLB playoff picture is complete. With the AL Central decided by a one-run playoff game, the Division Series schedule is set. The playoffs begin on Wednesday, October first, with the Brewers @ Phillies at 3:00pm, Dodgers @ Cubs at 6:30pm, and Sox @ Angels at 10:07pm.

Carolina Panthers (3-1) 24 Atlanta Falcons (2-2) 9- Delhomme led the Panthers over the Falcons with two touchdown passes.

Troy Brown of the New England Patriots announced his retirment this week. Brown who hasn’t played this year and only played in one game in 2007 has played his entire 15 year career with the Patriots. He leaves as the team record holder for receptions with 557.

New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress was suspended by the team for missing practice this week without notifying the team ahead of time. Burress will also pay fines of over $235,000. Burress is appealing the decision and is anxious to return to the practice field. Coach Coughlin is not concerned that the incident will be distracting for the team.

The Detroit Lions fired President Matt Millen this week. Millen was largely viewed as a disappointment for the Lions. In his seven years with the team the Lions posted a 31-84 record.

Vince Young is working his way back from a knee injury. Once healthy the Titans plan to keep him as the back up to QB Kerry Collins.

The Boston Red Sox may have had the champagne on ice Monday, but they finally got to break it open on Tuesday night. Boston bested AL Cy Young favorite Cliff Lee to ensure their trip to the postseason for the fifth time in six years. Thanks to a Jason Bay RBI single in the fifth and a dominating four-out save from Jonathan Papelbon, the Sox punched their ticket for the postseason.

The Sox started it off with a two run homer by Kevin Youkilis in the fourth inning. Cliff Lee managed to get out of the inning without any further damage. The Indians fired right back in the next inning, with a Grady Sizemore RBI single, a run on a Jamey Carroll fielder’s choice, and two RBI doubles from Shin-Soo Choo and Jhonny Peralta.

Boston battled right back. In the bottom of the inning Dustin Pedrioa hit a long double that scored Coco Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury. Jason Bay (who has never been to the postseason) drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle.

“Not that you need any incentive, but sometimes somebody gets walked in front of you, you want it a little extra,” Bay told MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “It was nice to get it, and to have it hold up. The bullpen came through huge, and it held up. My hit at that point put us ahead, but you look at David [Ortiz], you look at Youk, you look at [Pedroia]. Everybody pitched in today, and that’s kind of the way it’s been since I’ve been here.”

The Sox bullpen served up three scoreless innings split between Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson, Javier Lopez, and Papelbon’s dramatic save. Despite his recent troubles with innherited runners, Papelbon got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th then returned to retire the side. He needed only 9 pitches to strike out two and induce the game-ending flyout.

The Sox celebrated emphatically, with Papelbon literally stealing bases off the field and handing them to fans. Ortiz was in his trademark swim-goggles, and the entire team did the customary jumping up and down celebration in the middle of the field before retiring to the clubhouse for the champagne.

With Jason Bay on second and Jason Varitek on third, the Sox were poised to make a comeback against the Indians on Monday night. Instead, a ball that seemed like it was headed for the left field corner bounced off of third-base umpire Gerry Davis. Indians 3B Jamey Carroll made an easy play, and caught the scrambling Sox off guard.

Bay, who had seen Carroll grab the ball and throw to home, headed back to third base. Unfortunately, Varitek was barreling to third with his head down. Bay, with nowhere to go, was tagged out to end the threat.

“At that point, like I said, it was already messed up” Bay said to Ian Browne at MLB.com “It was unfortunate. It’s part of the game. Nobody is trying to do that. We had more opportunities later on to score more runs. You can’t look at that as the only chance.”

The other big chance for the Sox was in the Seventh. Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia had both gotten on with singles. Kevin Youkilis hit a high double to score a run, and Bay worked a walk to load the bases. Facing Indians reliever Rafael Betancourt, Jed Lowrie had a chance to give the sox a lead. Lowrie struck out looking, and Mark Kotsay flew out to end the inning.

Lowrie also had a chance to give the Sox a win in the ninth. With Bay on second and Youkilis at third, it would have only taken a base hit for the Sox to walk off with the win. Lowrie struck out on three pitches to end the game.

Baserunners being stranded was the name of the game Monday. The Sox stranded 12, and only managed two hits with runners in scoring position (both by Youkilis). With Jed Lowrie cooling back off, Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz ramping up their offense is important with the Sox knocking on October’s door.

Josh Beckett had a less than stellar outing, going 6 innings and giving up 4 runs on 7 hits, a walk, and uncharacteristic 3 hit batters. Javier Lopez, Justin Masterson, and Hideki Okajima combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief with 1 hit and three strikeouts. The Sox still need just one win (or a Yankees loss) to clinch a playoff spot.

The last MLB game played at the old Yankee Stadium happened last night on 9/21/2008 against the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will finish up their 2008 season on the road and will not make a playoff appearance this year. Sadly that means the old stadium is basically finished. The Yankees went out in style at home though, with a great pre-game ceremony featuring some great Yankees from the past including Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson. They also managed to close out the Stadium with a 7-3 win over the Orioles.  At the conclusion of the game, captain Derek Jeter addressed the crowd and led the Yankees in a walk around the Stadium to honor the fans.

Atlanta Falcons (2-1) 38 Kansas City Chiefs (0-3) 14 - QB Ryan threw for 192 yards in leading the Falcons to their 2nd win of the year. The Chiefs start their season 0-3.

Buffalo Bills (3-0) 24 Oakland Raiders (1-2) 23 - The Bills are off to a strong start that no one expected. With the Rams up next they have a great shot at starting 4-0.

Tampa Bay Bucs (2-1) 27 Chicago Bears (1-2) 24 - Despite 3 interceptions, QB Griese threw for 407 yards and two touchdowns in the Buc’s narrow win over the Raiders.

Tennessee Titans (3-0) 31 Houston Texans (0-2) 12 - The Titans got off to a great start with their 3rd win of the season.

Minnesota Vikings (1-2) 20 Carolina Panthers (2-1) 10 - The Vikings finally got their 1st win of the year in a 20-10 victory over Carolina.
