The Mets have been suspiciously quiet this offseason.  The only real move of note is trading Lastings Milledge for Brian Schneider and Ryan Church.  Sources close to the Mets seem to believe that Omar Minaya is holding out for a 4-1 type deal for Johan Santana to be worked out.

The Miami-Dade County Commission has approved a measure that may allot $350-$400 million for a new Marlins stadium.  The venue would replace the aging Orange Bowl, and would also be partially funded by the team (to the tune of $155 million).  If an agreement is reached, it could have a number of effects on the two-time World Series Champions.  The Florida Marlins would likely be renamed the Miami Marlins.  With a new, more inviting home, owner Jeff Loria would be far more likely to spend money on players that would improve the franchise.

With the dominance of the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots… it can be easy to forget the other major team in town.  After the locked out season of 2004-2005, the Bruins fielded two mediocre teams that never got above .500.  It was only the second time since 1967 that the B’s did not make the playoffs for two consecutive seasons in a row.  The Bruins currently hold the 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, and will be looking to avoid their longest playoff drought since before the oldest players in the league were born.

When Mark Prior was drafted in 2001, many baseball analysts picked him to be the next great dominant pitcher.  Unfortunately for Prior, he’s run into some of the worst luck any young phenom pitching prospect has had.  On field collisions, constant freak tendon injuries, and a line-drive comebacker have severely limited his playing time.  Since the beginning of the 2006 season, he has only appeared in 9 Major League games.  The Padres took a gamble and signed Prior to a 1-year $1 million deal with as much as $4.5 million in performance bonuses.  Prior is eyeing a mid-may return from his latest injury.

Kosuke Fukudome’s Chunichi Dragons just finished winning the 2007 Japan Series and Konami Cup Asia Series 2007. Now, Fukudome is joining a team that hasn’t won a championship in 100 years. The Cubs bid of $48 million along with the storied history of the franchise lured in the Japanese right fielder. Usually a prolific and consistent hitter, Fukudome’s 2007 campaign was limited by injuries. The Cubs organization is convinced that this is only temporary and that he will provide a solid bat in their revitalized ‘08 lineup.
