The Boston Globe’s Tony Massarotti writes that Japanese prospect Junichi Tazawa has agreed to a 3 year $3 million major-league contract, pending a physical in Boston sometime in the next few days. Although he has had no professional experience, Tazawa dazzled for Nippon Oil ENEOS, a corporate team. Subject to amateur draft rules, Tazawa would not be eligible to become a free agent until 2014.
On the low end of potential, Tazawa has been assessed to be like reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa, an effective middle reliever and setup man for the Mariners and Angels from 1997-2005. After some time in the minors, Tazawa could even develop into a middle or back of-the-rotation starter.
2009 Boston Red Sox tickets are available now!
