Victor Martinez Signs With Detroit

Posted by Ace Staff on November 23rd, 2010 in Sports

Multiple sources have confirmed that free agent catcher Victor Martinez will part ways with the Boston Red Sox and sign a four-year deal worth $50 million with the Detroit Tigers. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein previously expressed interest in re-signing Martinez and third baseman Adrian Beltre. Boston offered Martinez his choice of a three-year, $36 million deal or a four-year contract for $42 million following the 2010 regular season.

“When guys get to free agency, there are a lot of decisions that have to be made,” said manager Terry Francona. “One is by the player, one is by the organization and one is by other teams. Sometimes it doesn’t work out where a guy comes back, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to be any good. I feel real confident. The winter has to play itself out, it’s just beginning and it will be really interesting.”

The Sox may have already found their starting catcher in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a 25-year old prospect acquired from the Texas Rangers last season. They have until Tuesday night to offer arbitration to longtime catcher Jason Varitek. Check back for additional MLB offseason updates.
