Delonte West contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in his long awaited return as the Boston Celtics cruised past the Washington Wizards 114-83 last night at the TD Garden. After pleading guilty to weapons charges, Delonte was released by the Minnesota Timberwolves and later picked up by the Celtics. The six-year veteran was thrilled to be back on the court following his 10-game suspension. “For a minute in the summertime I thought I’d never be on an NBA court again,” he said. “But the Celtics know what I’m about. They understand the difference between a bad decision and a bad person.”
Boston spread the ball around well as all five starters notched double-digit numbers. Paul Pierce led the way with 23 and Kevin Garnett followed up with 18 on 9-of-11 shooting. Rajon Rondo controlled the tempo with 12 points and 13 assists. Boston was up 91-69 when the second unit took over and continued to expand the lead from there.
“I know Rajon may have had 30 (minutes), but other than that I could take those every night. That would be terrific,” Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said. “You’ve got to get yourself thrown back into the season, but now it’s time to get our minutes to where we want them.” The Celtics are set to matchup with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder this Friday at home.
