Cassel Injured, Patriots Study Backup Tyler Palko

The New England Patriots are back where they are most comfortable, atop the AFC East Division at 6-3 after Sunday’s 37-16 away victory over their rival New York Jets. The team doesn’t have much time to celebrate as they prepare to host the Kansas City Chiefs Monday night.

Although Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has worked closely with a number of people currently involved with the Chiefs (including Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel), he insists his players will have to work harder than usual to get familiar with the Kansas City roster. The two teams haven’t met since the season opener in 2008, when Tom Brady suffered a serious knee injury and Matt Cassel took over to lead the Pats for the rest of the year.

Unfortunately Cassel won’t have the opportunity to battle against his former squad, as the three-year Chiefs starter recently injured his hand and will undergo surgery.  New England has since turned their attention to back-up Tyler Palko. “We, of course, haven’t seen a lot of him in regular-season games, so you have to go back to the preseason,” said Belichick. “I’d say he’s an athletic player, quick release, can move around back there in the pocket. He’s left-handed and sees the field pretty well. I think they have lot of confidence in him.” Patriots vs. Chiefs tickets are now available!
