The Red Sox announced yesterday that Jason Varitek will be playing in Boston next year after deciding to extend his $3 million option. The organization made clear that the captain will serve as backup catcher to Victor Martinez. Varitek has been a member of the Red Sox for 13 seasons. Since starting for Boston he’s hit for an average of .259 with 175 home runs and 705 RBI’s.

“We’re happy to have Jason back and we look forward to a good year from him in 2010,” said Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. “He means an awful lot to the organization on and off the field. He helps solidify our catching position also and is a big asset to the pitching staff.”

The front office has definitely kept busy so far this offseason. They picked up the team option for Martinez and also reached an agreement with longtime knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. The team decided not to go forward with Alex Gonzalez’s $6 million option.  Look for more updates to come! Boston Red Sox tickets are now available for 2010!
