Patriots Pick Up CB Aqib Talib

The New England Patriots acquired cornerback Aqib Talib this past Thursday from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Patriots will also get a 2013 seventh-round draft pick and send a 2013 fourth-rounder to the Bucs in return for Talib.

He is also in the final season of his contract. The Pats will pay him the prorated portion of his $1.825 million base salary. He will begin eligible play for the Patriots on the Week 11 matchup against the Colts due to his suspension. Talib has just one game remaining in his four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. In a statement released earlier this month, Talib said he took an Adderall pill without a prescription “around the beginning of training camp.”

He continued, “This is especially regrettable because, for the past several months, with coach Schiano’s help, I’ve worked very hard to improve myself- professionally and personally- as a player and a man. I am truly sorry to my teammates, coaches and Buccaneers fans, and I’m disappointed in myself. I will work diligently every day of this suspension to stay in top football shape and be ready to help this team in the second half of the season.”

The Patriots’ pass defense has been the team’s biggest weakness so far and they hope Talib will be able to help it. He is a taller, longer corner than what the Pats have on their roster and is best known for his coverage and ball skills with his 18 career interceptions.

“The thing we talk about is to stay the course, try to improve,” Patriots cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer said after the trade was announced. “We need to get better. Things that we’ve done well, let’s keep doing well and just stay the course and try to get better today.”

The Patriots face off against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Get your tickets here with Ace.
