Phillies Steal Game 1 In the Bronx

Posted by Ace Staff on October 29th, 2009 in Sports

Cliff Lee shut down the New York Yankees power line up, collecting 10 K’s while giving up just one unearned run as the Philadelphia Phillies handled CC Sabathia and the Yankees bullpen 6-1 to open the 2009 World Series. Third basemen Alex Rodriguez after going on a tear all post-season struck out three times in his World Series debut. “I did keep it simple today. He kept it even more simple,” said Rodriguez of Lee. “He threw the ball well. When a guy comes out like that, you tip your cap and move on. He made some pretty good pitches.”

Sabathia made his best effort for a pitching duel, giving up two runs courtesy of Chase Utley’s two homers in his seven innings of work. After CC’s exit the Yanks bullpen just couldn’t hold it together.  Phil Hughes and Brian Bruney gave an extra four runs to the Phillies in the eighth and ninth innings to “close out” Game 1.

Game 2 is scheduled for Yankee stadium tonight at 7:57 PM and will feature starting pitchers Pedro Martinez and A.J. Burnett. Martinez in last week’s NLCS series against the Los Angeles Dodgers threw for seven scoreless innings. Burnett during the 2009 regular season held a 13-9 record with a 4.04 ERA.
