The Boston Red Sox have hired John Farrell as their next manager. Announced Sunday afternoon, Farrell has a three-year deal with the Sox and will leave his position as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. As compensation, the Sox will send veteran infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto and also receive pitcher David Carpenter.

“We are thrilled to name John Farrell as our new manager,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. “John has been a major league pitcher, front office executive, coach and manager. His broad set of experiences and exceptional leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead our team. I have known him in various capacities throughout my career, and I hold him in the highest regard as a baseball man and as a person.”

The Sox had formally interviewed four candidates to replace Bobby Valentine: Tim Wallach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tony Pena from the New York Yankees, Brad Ausmus from the San Diego Padres and DeMarlo Hale of the Baltimore Orioles.

Farrell had been at the top of their list from the start, however. He served as the Red Sox’s pitching coach from 2007-2010. Last year the Red Sox had tried to acquire him but weren’t willing to pay the asking price. His baseball career has included eight seasons pitching in the majors for the Indians, five years as assistant coach/ pitching and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State, and five years as the development director for the Indians.

“I’m extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston,” Said Farrell. “I love this organization. It’s a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us.”

This past season the Sox finished with their worst season (69-93) in over four decades under the management of Bobby Valentine. Hopefully John Farrell can help the team restore what they have lost.
