Ravens Seek Revenge in Playoff Rematch vs Patriots

The Patriots and Ravens will matchup for the first time since competing in the AFC Championship game last season back in January. New England was able to squeeze out a 23-20 victory once Baltimore’s Billy Cundiff (who now plays for the Redskins) missed the game-tying field goal in the closing seconds. It’s clear that this veteran Ravens squad is still hurt by last season’s loss and will be extra motivated to come out on top when the Patriots arrive at M&T Bank Stadium Sunday night.

With Ray Lewis and Ed Reed up to their usual tricks two weeks into the NFL season, the Ravens sport one of the league’s best defenses once again. Lewis showed up to training camp 40 pounds lighter and has already contributed 19 tackles in two games. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick referred to Ed Reed as “one of the best free safeties to ever play the game.”

“They’re very, very talented players, they play well within their scheme, and they complement each other well,” said Patriots QB Tom Brady. “They’re very physical, they’re very tough, they’re very smart and they really take advantage of bad offensive plays. I think more so than anything, they really capitalize on mistakes, so we’ve got to try to limit our mistakes.”

New England’s defense is much improved compared to their 2011 unit, as rookies Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower have already established themselves as key players this early in the season. Both offenses have the ability to produce at a high level but with a pair of strong defensive units taking the field, expect a low scoring game that will come down to the last set of plays.
