Pedro Outduels Lincecum, Phillies Win 2-1

Posted by Ace Staff on September 4th, 2009 in Sports

Philadelphia Phillies veteran pitcher Pedro Martinez had a taste of his MLB glory days last night, throwing seven innings to outpitch San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum. In the Phillies 2-1 victory Pedro struck out nine, but was more impressed with Lincecum’s 11 total K’s.  “He reminds me a little bit of me, but he’s twice as good as me at this time of my career,” Martinez said of Lincecum. “It took me seven years to win a Cy Young.”

Lincecum had very high praise for Pedro as well, saying “It’s ridiculous how nasty his stuff still is. When you watch him, it’s obvious he knows what he’s doing out there.” Martinez after the game was reminiscing and said he had a flash back “to the good old times.”  He went on to talk about not having the same power he had back in the 90′s, but knows he can still be affective if he hits his spots.

Each of the pitchers surrendered solo home runs in the first two innings to make it 1-1. The Phillies notched the go-ahead run in the 6th with a Ryan Howard double that scored Chase Utley.  Philadelphia is now set to take on the Houston Astros starting tonight, while the Giants head to Milwaukee to match up against the Brewers.  San Francisco is just one game out of the Wild Card chase.
