Red Sox Handle Yanks 9-5, Even Series

Posted by Ace Staff on September 1st, 2011 in Sports

Boston Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett pitched solid through seven innings of work as the offense racked up 12 hits en route a decisive 9-5 victory over the New York Yankees last night at Fenway Park. Beckett has been in control against the Yanks all season, improving to a 4-0 record against his rivals while holding a 1.85 ERA. “The Yankee-Red Sox thing has been here before I got here for a long time and it’ll be here long after I’m here,” he said. “The big thing is we’re both really good teams and there’s a reason why you’ve got to play those games a little differently.”

Jacoby Ellsbury came through with a tie-breaking two-run homer in the sixth inning for Boston. David Ortiz and Jason Varitek also contributed two-run shots. Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon shut down the Yankees lineup in the eighth and ninth innings. The Red Sox (83-52) currently hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Yankees (81-53) in the AL East Division. Jon Lester is set to take the mound for Boston tonight against New York’s A.J. Burnett. Boston Red Sox tickets are now available!
