Boras Will Seek Top Dollar for Ellsbury

By on August 30, 2012 in

Rumored to have been placed on waivers by the Boston Red Sox last week, Jacoby Ellsbury is viewed by general manager Ben Cherington as the type of player “we want here.” Despite trade rumors surrounding the 28-year old center fielder in the midst of Boston’s blockbuster deal with the LA Dodgers, there was no confirmation as to whether the Red Sox were trying to clean up even more than expected. Ellsbury is eligible for one more year of arbitration and is set to become a free-agent after the 2013 season.

Ellsbury’s agent Scott Boras views his client as a franchise player and won’t be easy on the Red Sox if they present a contract extension in the near future. “They have rights over the player. He has shown he can hit .300 in the big leagues, not once but twice,” said Boras. “He’s at a point in his career he’s proven he can be a No. 3-hitter type of guy, with power. He’s a premium center fielder. Everywhere I go, they all ask. That’s all I can say. You’re talking about teams really coveting this player.”

Boras represents a long list of high-profile players that include Carlos Beltran, Prince Fielder, Bryce Harper, Matt Holliday, Alex Rodriguez, Stephen Strasburg, Jayson Werth and Barry Zito. Ellsbury has had been battling injuries this season and also spent most of 2010 on the disabled list. In 2011 he posted MVP-like numbers, hitting .321 with 105 RBI’s and 39 stolen bases. More Boston Red Sox updates to come.
