In the aftermath of sending away Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett while creating over $260 million in cap space, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington is set up to rebuild and has vowed to make more “disciplined” decisions going forward. When asked about the team’s interest in top free agents like Josh Hamilton, Cherington didn’t deny having conversations on the possibility but also emphasized that there are several ways for the front office to retool the roster this offseason.

“It’s like getting a big tax refund,” he said. “You can’t just go spend it in one place or you end up in the same place you were. We have an opportunity now, we just have to make the best of it. It will be exciting to find ways to complement that core of talent (we currently have). We’ve got to be smart in doing it. We can’t just go and try to fill the void in one or two fell swoops. We’ve got to try to build a team and do it in a smart way and do it in a way that reflects what we believe in.”

The Red Sox just won 3-of-4 at home against the Kansas City Royals and will next take on the LA Angels for three games starting Tuesday, August 28th. They will return to Boston Friday, September 7th to begin their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays after games in Oakland and Seattle. Boston Red Sox tickets are now available!
