Rookie QB Ryan Mallett connected with Alex Silvestro for touchdown 1:16 into the second quarter, but a pair of costly turnovers soon after resulted in the Philadelphia Eagles win Monday night’s preseason contest 27-17 over the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. The Pats fumbled twice at the end of the half, which ultimately gift wrapped an extra 14 points for the Eagles to find themselves back in the game.

Mallett completed 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards and one TD. “Ryan’s a very confident player, both him and Brian (Hoyer),” wide receiver Deion Branch said, “but it’s hard for them because they have to play behind Tom Brady.”

Much of the Patriots firepower on offense sat out this week between Brady, Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Philadelphia’s star QB Michael Vick first took the field for the Eagles but was leveled and helped off the field after just six plays. “Mike’s tough,” said Eagles RB LeSean McCoy. “I kind of figured it would be all right, even though he took kind of a big blow.” The Eagles are next scheduled to battle the Cleveland Browns this Friday as the Patriots head to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers.
