Sox, Yanks Ready for Weekend Showdown

Posted by Ace Staff on August 21st, 2009 in Sports

After completing the sweep in Toronto yesterday, the Boston Red Sox have built up all the momentum they need to take on the New York Yankees at Fenway this weekend.  With John Lester on the hill last night, the Sox handled the Blue Jays 8-1. The 10-7 Lester let up just one run on three hits in eight innings.  J.D. Drew supplied most of the run production for Boston with a pair of homers in the third and fourth innings.  Victor Martinez also knocked one out in the seventh off of reliever Shawn Camp.

The Red Sox have now moved to 6 1/2 games behind New York in the AL East Standings heading into the three-game weekend series.  Boston will surely be out for revenge, knowing they were swept by the Yankees 4-0 last time the two teams matched up.  John Lester is looking forward to the series after seeing his offense put up some numbers this week.  “That’s big for us — I think more mentally than anything — to prove to ourselves that we can swing the bats.  I don’t think our slump, or whatever you want to call it, was going to last forever,” said Lester. “We’ve got too many guys on this team that can swing the bat too good to hold us down too long.”

Brad Penny will get the call for Boston to start tonight’s game against lefty veteran Andy Pettite.  In Penny’s two career starts facing New York, he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA over 11 innings.  Sox Rookie Junichi Tazawa is expected to pitch game two against the 10-6 A.J. Burnett.  Though these games are just as meaningful, the real showdown will take place in game three when Ace pitchers Josh Beckett and CC Sabathia square off.  With both line ups on a tear from the plate, there is no telling what can happen this weekend.
