USA Basketball just recently capped their 2012 Olympic showcase with a 107-100 victory over Spain to win gold once again. Led by superstars LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, the team proved that the 2008 games in Beijing were no fluke by handling any and all competition thrown their way. Under coach Mike Krzyzewski, who vows to leave the U.S. bench following this year’s Olympics, the team has held a 61-1 record with two gold medals and a 2010 World Championship earned in Turkey.

Krzyzewski plans to stay on as a consultant to director of USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo but wishes to be relieved of further head coaching responsibilities. “He’s been the perfect guy,” said Bryant. “He’s not an ‘it’s my way or the highway’ kind of guy. He’s going to figure out the best way to do things with what he’s got. He’s adapted to us. It’s been an honor to play for him. He’ll go down in history for what he’s done.”

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers and San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich are viewed as the frontrunners to take over Team USA. Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins can be added to that list of potential suitors, who was on the 1972 team that lost gold to the Soviet Union at the Olympics in Munich. Rivers gave a clear yes when asked if he’d accept the position and also endorsed both Popovich and Collins as ideal candidates. Check back for additional NBA offseason updates.
