Cabrera Hits for the Cycle

Posted by Ace Staff on August 3rd, 2009 in Sports

Center fielder Melky Cabrera became the 13th Yankee in their 100+ years of existence to hit for the cycle as New York defeated the White Sox 8-5 yesterday in Chicago. He started his day with a three-run homer to left off Mark Buehrle to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead.  In the fourth he led off with a double to right and later knocked a base hit in the fifth. In the seventh inning he worked the count full before hitting a frozen rope off the right field wall, bouncing to the left giving him just enough time to reach third base.

Everyone was pulling for him,” said Derek Jeter, who was present when Tony Fernandez hit for the cycle almost 14 years ago. “It’s difficult; you can’t just go up there and try to hit a triple.” The Yankees are scheduled to travel to Toronto for two games against the Blue Jays before hosting the Boston Red Sox for a four game series starting August 6th.
