Cano Sets Record In HR Derby Win

Posted by Ace Staff on July 12th, 2011 in Sports

New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano beat out Boston Red Sox sluggers Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz in this year’s annual MLB All-Star Home Run Derby Monday at Chase Field. Cano outslugged Gonzalez with a record breaking 12 homers in the final round. Both finalists belted 20 apiece in the first two rounds to clear the rest of the field.

Cano’s performance certainly stood out more so in light of the six-year veteran choosing his father to pitch to him. “When he called me at home, that he wanted me to come to the United States because he’s going to be in the Home Run Derby, I said, ‘I’ll be happy to pitch to you,’ because that’s what I do at home,” said father Jose Cano, former Houston Astros pitcher.

Defending champion David Ortiz and Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder tied at the #3 spot with 9 homers each. Toronto’s Jose Bautista blasted 4 home runs in total. Milwaukee’s Rickie Weeks and LA’s Matt Kemp finished with 2 and 3, respectively. Tonight’s All-Star game is set to start up at 8:00 PM ET.
