The Red Sox started their series against the Kansas City Royals with a disappointing loss. With a four run lead early in the game, the Sox allowed the Royals to get back in it. Brad Penny threw 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and 6 hits. Leaving the game with a lead, Penny just needed the bullpen to finish of the sub-par Royals to give him the win. However this didn’t happen. Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson gave up a combined 5 runs in 1 total inning. The Sox manufactured runs by homeruns from David Ortiz and Dustin Pedrioa. Ortiz hit his 300th career homerun, a feat that will be marked down in Sox history. Jason Bay, Kevin Youkilis, and Mark Kotsay all hit rbi’s to accumulate the Sox’s 6 runs. With the loss, the Red Sox are now tied with the Yankees for first place (with the tiebreaker in hand) in the AL East.
