The Boston Celtics selected Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger and Syracuse center Fab Melo with the 21st and 22nd overall picks in the NBA draft on Thursday night. Sullinger would have been a lottery pick had he entered the draft in 2011. He averaged 17.5 points and 9.2 rebounds last season while battling back problems to help the Buckeyes advance to the Final Four.

“Obviously we needed to address size,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “The fact that number one, Jared Sullinger fell to us, is just fortunate. Last year he would have a been a top-5 pick. It gives us a rebounder, a high IQ player, a good player, a really good player from the outside.”

Melo was named the 2011-12 Big East Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks for Syracuse. “Fab Melo does the same thing,” added Rivers. ”He has size and we like size, we needed size. It gives us the chance to work with him. We think he can be a good player.”

The C’s also picked up Melo’s Syracuse teammate Kris Joseph. The senior forward averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 rebounds for the Orange last year. More Boston Celtics offseason updates to come.
