Franklin Morales stepped in for the injured Josh Beckett and allowed just two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts to lift the Boston Red Sox to win 7-4 over the Chicago Cubs yesterday at Wrigley Field. Outfielder Ryan Kalish also delivered for Boston, driving in the go-ahead run with a single to center to spark a three-run seventh inning. The 24-year old was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game after Ryan Sweeney went on the disabled list.

“That’s what baseball’s been for years,” said Kalish. “People getting hurt and people stepping up. That’s just the name of this game.Got a chance in a big situation, kind of got over anxious at first. I just stepped out, told myself this is baseball, I’ve been here before.”

The Red Sox were able to win 2 of 3 at Wrigley, currently standing at .500 and 7 1/2 games behind the AL East leading New York Yankees. The Cubs are now 22-44 and far behind in the NL Central standings. Former Red Sox GM and Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein insists that improvements have been made despite their overall struggles this season. “It’s been a while for me personally since I’ve been in this situation, but I do think we’ve stayed together through the whole thing and also managed to keep our eye on the bigger picture,” he said. “We’ve made a lot of progress behind the scenes.”

The Red Sox will return to Fenway for nine straight games before traveling again, set to welcome the Miami Marlins, Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays. The Miami series will start up Tuesday night at 7:10 PM. Find the best available Boston Red Sox tickets here at AceTicket.com!
