Shaquille O’Neal Announces Retirement

Posted by Ace Staff on June 1st, 2011 in Sports

Recognized by many as the most dominant force in NBA History, Shaquille O’Neal just recently announced his retirement through social media tool Tout (a real-time video messaging service): “We did it. Nineteen years baby. I want to thank you very much, that’s why I’m telling you first, I’m about to retire. Love you, talk to you soon.”

O’Neal racked up a total of 28,596 points in his 19-year career, winning three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and one title with the Miami Heat. His run was cut short due to a mid-season achilles injury. He started the regular season on a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics.  The C’s posted a 21-4 record when he was on the floor for 20 or more minutes this season.

“I really, really thought about coming back, but this Achilles is very damaged and if I had it done the recovery would be so long we’d have same outcome as this last year - everyone sitting around and waiting for me,” he said. “I’m letting everybody know now so Danny (Ainge) and the organization can try to get younger talent. I would love to come back, but they say once the Achilles is damaged it’s never the same. I don’t want to take that chance.”

Check back for additional Boston Celtics off-season updates.
