Something Corporate, a staple indie band of the 90’s, announced a reunion tour for summer 2010 just last week after having been on a hiatus for years. The foursome will be playing an 18-city tour, hitting Boston and New York by mid-August, as well as co-headlining Bamboozle, which they were added to upon very short notice. The band is made up of singer and pianist Andrew McMahon, Josh Partingon, Kevin Page and Brian Ireland.
The hiatus began in summer 2004 after having spent years on the road, promising the break would not be permanent. The hiatus was further extended when in 2005, on the very day he had finished recording an album with his side project Jack’s Mannequin, Andrew McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He since has gone into remission and released another album with Jack’s Mannequin, which reached #8 on the Top 200, surpassing all levels of success he’d ever achieved with Something Corporate.
In announcing the reunion of the band this past December, Andrew McMahon informed the media that he is more “nostalgically charged” than “creatively charged” in terms of music, and would rather play their older songs than start writing new material. From this came the release of Played in Space: the Best of Something Corporate, a two disc compilation of SoCo’s 14 fan favorites from previous releases as well as five new or rerecorded tracks. The two new tracks provide hopeful insight of what’s in store for the band’s indefinite future.
The album was released April 27th and was rather well-received considering the circumstances. Despite having a greatest hits collection out, Something Corporate actually only released two studio albums and a handful of EPs, but they masterfully chop off what weakened their albums and combine the material for a sold, two disc trip down memory lane.
