Wakefield Pitches Sox Past Division Leading Jays

Posted by Ace Staff on May 20th, 2009 in Homepage, Sports

Tim Wakefield’s outing on Tuesday started with a strikeout, and went up from there. Wake pitched like the ace of the rotation, going 8 innings hile giving up just one run on five hits and two walks.”Swings and misses and popups are usually good signs the ball is moving pretty well,” Wakefield told the AP’s Jimmy Golen. “Tonight was just one of those nights when I had very good stuff. I was trying to keep them off-balance and get a win.” Despite allowing a homerun to former teammate Kevin Millar, Wakefied kept the ball in the infield and kept his appearance to a tidy 97 pitches.

Jonathan Papelbon followed with a perfect inning to notch his 11th save. The Sox offense came courtesy of an RBI each from Wakefield’s personal catcher George Kottaras and Kevin Youkilis’ temporary replacement Jeff Bailey. The win puts the Sox just 2.5 games behind the Jays in the AL East. On Wednesday night, Bret Cecil matches up against Brad Penny for game 2 of the series.

Boston Red Sox tickets are available now.
