The luck of the Boston Red Sox ran out Tuesday night in the 9th inning against the Cleveland Indians. With the score tied up at 8 and Mark DeRosa on third base, Javier Lopez fumbled the play at first, and the Indians walked off with the victory. “It’s a play a pitcher makes a thousand times in his career,” Lopez said in a post-game press conference. “I just took my eyes off it. There’s no real excuse for it. It’s a tough way to break a winning streak.”
Sox started Brad Penny had another tough outing. Penny gave up 7 runs (4 earned) through 2 2/3 innings on 7 hits and three walks, only striking out one. Spot closer and de-facto set-up man Takashi Saito blew his first save of the year. On the positive side, Hunter Jones threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and as-yet-unscored-on Ramon Ramirez threw a perfect inning and a third.
The Sox and Indians will match up for the rubber game tonight at 7:30pm.
