Wakefield Nearly Flawless vs Oakland

Posted by Ace Staff on April 16th, 2009 in Homepage, Sports

Red Sox longtime knuckle-baller Tim Wakefield came within five outs of pitching a no-hitter as the Sox dominated the A’s on the offensive end
8-2 yesterday in Oakland.  Kurt Suzuki ended Wakefield?s streak in the eighth with a single to left.

“I’m not disappointed,” said Wakefield. “It’s something that’s great to try to get, but the biggest thing today was to try to preserve the bullpen going into the off-day tomorrow, and hopefully we can get a streak going.”

Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew both homered for Boston, combining for five RBI’s.  Lowell’s home run marked the only two runs let up by A’s starting pitcher Brett Anderson.  Despite the lopsided outcome in the end, Anderson pitched through 7 solid innings allowing just five hits with five strikeouts.

The Red Sox will travel back to Fenway next and host the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow at 7:10 pm.  Boston Red Sox tickets are now available!
