Red Sox Capture Opening Day Slugfest

Posted by Ace Staff on April 5th, 2010 in Sports

Kevin Youkilis belted two doubles and a triple to rally his Boston Red Sox past the New York Yankees 9-7 to open the 2010 MLB season last night at Fenway Park. The Sox found themselves down 5-1 early in the contest before chipping away to tie it up in the sixth. The Yanks regained the lead in the 7th after Robinson Cano grounded to second to give Mark Teixeira enough time to reach the plate. Jorge Posada then singled to center, scoring Alex Rodriguez to set the stage for Boston to retaliate once more.

Dustin Pedroia sailed one over the monster in that same inning to make it 7-7 before Youkilis broke for home on Posada’s passed ball. Pedroia added the extra insurance with a single to knock in Mike Cameron. “We all have faith in ourselves,” said Youkilis. “It’s good to get a win opening night. It’s good for the city. It’s good for the fans. It’s good for the players. It’s good for everyone. But it’s still just one game.”

An event most speculated to be a pitcher’s duel between Josh Beckett and CC Sabathia featured both ace’s letting up five earned runs in no more than five innings of work. “You don’t really want to give them runs,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “That’s the last thing you want to do to a club like this.” The Sox and Yanks are next set to matchup Tuesday, April 6th before the opening series concludes the following day. 2010 Boston Red Sox tickets are now available right here at AceTicket.com!
