Tim Thomas stopped 32 shots on net for his ninth shutout of the season to lead his Boston Bruins past the Chicago Blackhawks last night at the TD Garden. Zdeno Chara was first to tack one on the board 12:02 into the second period before Johnny Boychuck came through with another just minutes later. Nathan Horton then supplied the insurance score at the start of the third block.
Bruins forward Shawn Thornton left the game with a cut above his right eye after taking a skate to the head in the second. The injury led to 40 stitches and no return to game action for the night. “I’m fine,” said Thornton after the game. “I guess I was lucky. It could have been worse. It could have been on the eye. No headache, no concussion, no nothing. It was just throbbing a little bit from getting stitches, but nothing bad.”
Mark Recchi earned the assist from Boychuck’s goal to move him up to 12th on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. The 21-year veteran has earned 576 goals and 956 assists to give him 1,579 total points. “It’s unbelievable if you think about it. It’s big names that he’s passing,” said Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron. “It’s an unbelievable amount of points.” The Bruins are next scheduled to host the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday, March 31st before they matchup with the Atlanta Thrashers the following Saturday.
