After winning eight straight spring training games, the New York Yankees have lost their last two against the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees pitching has not been strong as of late, letting up five runs to the Rays and eight to the Phillies. Raul Ibanez hit 3-for-3 for Philadelphia, and Eric Bruntlett went 3-for-4. Matt Stairs and Miguel Cairo added homeruns for extra run support.
Chien-Ming Wang allowed five hits, three runs and two walks in five plus innings. Though the numbers don’t look pretty, Yankees manager Joe Girardi was happy with the outing. “Each inning that went on, it seemed like his sinker got better,” he said. “That’s a good sign. He was down a lot in the zone. That was clearly, to me, his best outing”
Right field has been an open spot for New York since the start of spring training. Girardi has recently stated that Xavier Nady is looking like the better candidate over Nick Swisher with two weeks left. New York will meet the Boston Red Sox one last time before the start of the 2009-2010 regular season. The game will take place in Tampa, Florida tonight at 7:15 p.m.
