Patriots Trade Cassel to Kansas City

Posted by Ace Staff on March 3rd, 2009 in Homepage, Sports

Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel will be joining teammate Mike Vrabel in Kansas City after dealing with the Chiefs.  New England gave them away for just the #34th pick in the draft, knowing they were able to free up approximately $20 million in cap space.

Last season Cassel stepped in after Tom Brady went down with a season ending knee injury in their first game.  From there he was able to lead the Pats to an 11-5 record while throwing for 21 touchdowns and earning an 89.2 QB passer rating.  After seven years as a back up with Southern California and the Patriots, Cassel finally got his chance to prove he was first string quality.

After a more than successful season, to keep Cassel the Patriots would have to offer at least $14 million his way to keep him on the roster. New England decided to give him a possible starting opportunity elsewhere, knowing their star Tom Brady is fully expected to be recovered by the start of next season.  “I’m feeling great.  I’m feeling really good,” said Brady. “Everything is progressing just as I expected.”
