Celtics Handle Wizards, End Skid

Posted by Ace Staff on February 2nd, 2010 in Sports

The Boston Celtics earned their first victory in four games Monday night against the Washington Wizards, but not all was good news for the 30-16 veteran squad at the Verizon Center. Even with Kevin Garnett back in the lineup, the Celtics haven’t been able to catch a break with injuries. Captain Paul Pierce sprained his foot during the third quarter and was forced to monitor his minutes from there.

The rest of the C’s then picked up the slack, posting 25 points to Washington’s 10 in the final stretch to win 99-88.  Pierce mentioned after the game that he’s been through a similar injury and hopes for a quick recovery. “I’ll get some X-rays tomorrow, but I think it’s not going to be too bad,” he said. “I would have known by now (if it was broken). I think I’ll be all right.”

Washington chose to call out officials instead of reflecting on their own mistakes in the remaining block. “You’re playing against the Boston Celtics, so you’re not going to get a lot of calls.” said Wizards center Brendan Haywood. “KG’s going to set illegal screens; they’re not going to be called. That’s just part of the game.”

Garnett took a different approach to the press with some encouraging words for the 16-31 Wizards organization. “Even though their record is dismal, they still have guys who can put the ball in the basket,” he said. “They have guys who are experienced. It wasn’t like it was going to be an easy night.” KG led Boston in scoring with 19 points while collecting six rebounds in the process. Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo followed up with 17 apiece, as Pierce contributed 12 in his 28 minutes played.

Washington will next matchup with the New York Knicks tomorrow night as the Celtics play host to Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat at the TD Garden. Boston Celtics tickets are now available right here at Ace!
