Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon avoided arbitration and signed a 1-year $6.5 million contract. While they tried to reach a deal on a long-term contract, a short term deal was reached in the interim. Papelbon is locked up with the Sox through 2011, and will be eligible for arbitration again after next season. One of the top closers in the game, Papelbon is moving up from the $800,000 salary he made during a 41 save season last year. Papelbon has racked up 113 saves in 128 chances with a 1.84 ERA in 3 1/2 years with the Sox. Among pitchers with over 200 innings, Papelbon’s career ERA is the second best since 1900.
