Broncos Stun Steelers; Face Patriots on Saturday

By on January 8, 2012 in ,

No one expected this match-up between Denver and Pittsburgh to be so close and no one (with the exception of Broncos fans and Tebow-Maniacs) thought Denver would be the winner at Mile High Stadium today.  But Tebow pulled off the seemingly impossible with an impressive win over the favored Steelers in an OT thriller.

The 1st quarter may have belonged to the Steelers but unfortunately they could only manage 2 field goals (45 yard & 38 yard kicks) by Shaun Suisham. Once Tebow and the Broncos warmed up, their offense exploded in the 2nd half for 17 unanswered points. Tebow provided much of the magic first with a 30 yard TD pass to Eddie Royal. Tebow followed this TD with an 8 yard rushing TD of his own. Denver’s defense was all over Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger with 3 good hits including one painful sack. Big Ben was clearly limping after the sack and you could clearly see it was affecting his game. He was picked off in the middle of the 2nd Quarter setting up a Broncos field goal for a 17-6 lead.

The Broncos refused to let up as the 1st half reached the 2 minute warning. They finished an 8 play, 59 yard drive with another Traber field goal making in 20-6 with just over a minute left to play. With the ball back in Roethlisberger’s hand the Steelers were unable to put together a scoring drive, punting with 23 seconds on the clock.  The dejected Steelers headed to the locker room looking at a 14 point deficit to start the 2nd half.

The 2nd half started with an eventual Denver punt putting the pressure back on Pittsburgh to turn their offense around.   Pittsburgh responded with a gritty 87 yard, 11 play drive culminating in a 1 yard TD run by Wallace.  Denver would open the 4th Quarter with a field goal after a 12 play, 63 yard drive by Tebow’s offense.  The Steelers answered with a field goal of their own bringing their deficit back down to 7 with a score 23-16.

The Steelers were intent on capitalizing on a 4th Quarter Willis Mcgahee fumble, taking over on offense on their own 40 yard line.  Big Ben did not disappoint driving the Steelers down the field 55 yards hitting Cotchery for a 31 yard TD pass in tight coverage. With the extra point the game was all even at 23-23.  Neither team would put any points on the board for the remainder of regulation as the game went to the 1st non-sudden death playoff game since the rule was put in effect 20 months ago.

The new rules didn’t matter as Tim Tebow threw a TD pass to open the OT winning the game for Broncos and earning a trip to New England to take on the Patriots.
