Bill Cosby was born on July 12th, 1937 in Philadelphia, PA and is a very prominently known African-American actor and comedian. A veteran stand-up comic, he got his start at random clubs, then landed a front role in the 1960s action show I Spy. In the late 1960s, he would star in his own television series, The Bill Cosby Show. He was one of the major characters on the children's program for its first two seasons, and created the funny educational cartoon series Fat Albert and the Krebs Kids, about a group of young friends growing up in the city. Cosby also acted in many films, however none has received the acclaim of his television work.
During the mid 1980s, Cosby produced and starred in what is considered to be one of the decade's defining sitcoms, The Cosby Show. The show aired from 1984 until 1992. This sitcom featured the Cosby’s, an upper-middle class African-American family that never resorted to the kinds of stereotypes previously seen among African-Americans in the prime-time television spotlight. While some disputed that The Cosby Show ignored the issues of racial inequity still prevalent in everyday society, many concluded that it showcased positive role models.
Over the years, Cosby has also continued appearing on the stand-up circuit. His material mainly consists of anecdotal tales, often dealing with his childhood and raising his own family. His act has always been considered a clean set that is family-friendly. His good-natured, paternal image has made him a popular individual and earned him the nickname of "America's Dad".
