The Akron Zips represent the 15 varsity programs that compete for the University of Akron in the NCAA Division 1 Mid-American Conference. The idea of the name Zips (zippers for short) originated from rubber overshoes in the 1920's. The University showcases its primary events at Summa Field at InfoCision Stadium and James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Akron football program has earned an all-time record of 482-461-37. In 2005 they advanced to the Motor City Bowl but fell short to Memphis 38-31. The basketball team has developed quite nicely into contenders over the past few years. 2009 marked their fourth straight 20+ win season and first ever MAC championship.
